Growing clothing

BioCouture is the experimental fashion collaboration between Suzanne Lee, author of Fashioning the Future: Tomorrow's Wardrobe, and Dr. David Hepworth, a biologist and materials scientist.  Together they are literally growing new material out of a Kombucha based brew fermented in bathtubs.  During the fermentation process, bacteria feeds on sugar added to the mix then spin fibers of cellulose.  A thick layer of cellulose is harvested, dried, and treated.  The result is a textile similar to vegetable leather.

BioCouture has been shown in Trash Fashion: designing out of waste at the Antenna Science Museum and at the Modemuseum Hasselt in the exhibition, Alter Nature: The Future that Never Was.

Suzanne talks about growing clothing on Ted.com.

All of this reminds me of Martin Margiela's exhibition (9/4/1615)
